Poetics Essay

Poetry is a genre of literature. Poetry is one of my favorite types of literature to compose because there are many different paths you can take. When first getting this assignment, I was very excited because we did not have a set prompt so my ideas were not caged in at all; which was a good thing.

The first poem is about the Women’s March and I chose to write about this march because for starters it is the largest one day march in United States history and it kind of helped that my mom was one of the four co-founders. The Women’s March was organized because our president, Donald Trump, was inappropriately touching women and was called out for it with evidence but no repercussion was held. It was also organized due to the immense amount of inequality that women had compared to men. In my poem, one of my lines stated, “ Millions of people came together with the thought of one”, this line was very significant because even with all the division that is occurring within the United States, women, men and children united as one whether a democrat or republican. Me using the word, ‘millions’, shows the audience the legitimate amount of people that were at the march and how so many people can all want to fight for the same common goal.

My second and personal favorite poem, Where We’re From, is about the stereotypes that Arab-American and African-Americans are labeled with and how they overcome and try to strip themselves of the labels. I tried to give off the message at the end that no matter who you are or where you come from we are all one at the end of the day. I used the technique of repetition; every line started with either, ‘ Where I’m from’ or ‘Where she’s from’, I believed this kept the rhythm flowing and held power every time I stated it. One of my favorite lines of the poem was,

“Where I’m from the police is always spying on me

Where shes from a police precinct is where they say to find her”

This hit home to me because about two years ago police officers were really honing in on the Muslim communities and literally putting cameras everywhere to spy on us and watch our every move as if we were going to do something unimaginable. Then the second part of the line also hit home because the percentage of African Americans that are incarcerated are through the roof and society has made it a norm for African Americans to be in a precinct.

My final poem, Heard, was the most difficult to put together just due to the fact that I had no idea if I wanted to dig deeper into my personal emotions, but I chose it was best if I did because the audience will feel as if they trust me. The technique I used for this poem to hold significance, emotion, and power was to take the last word of each line and make it the first word of the next line. This gave me a steady pace to read the poem and gives the perfect amount of time for the audience to take in what I said and reflect.

Overall this assignment was my favorite assignment throughout the semester just because I got to show who I was and what I am passionate about in the span of three short poems
